Introduction

About this time last year I was in the market for a new laptop. I had been waiting for years for this day to come and if I had waited so long, I wanted the coolest thing that was out there.

Well, my search for that coolest laptop took me to Apple iBook. However, that notebook was way too over my budget so I had to settle down for the second best thing.

Well, If I couldn't get the coolest laptop, I could at least get myself the thing that makes it really cool - The Software inside it! And this was the first time I encountered iTunes.

Interface

There is only one way to describe the interface for iTunes and that is that it is extremely simple. The most wonderful thing about it is that it does not sacrifice the usability while keeping it simple.

Organizing your Music Collection

If, like me, you really have 120 CDs of Music to manage then I'd say that iTunes is something indispensable for you. You can organize your collection by Genre, Artist and Album. iTunes obtains the genre and other information from each track's ID3 parameters.

Another thing which I love about iTunes' music organization ability is its real-time search like that in FireFox. And if you haven't already grown used to this thing then you really would, trust me.

iTunes beats other Jukeboxes on the front of PlayList Management too. Not only can you build your playlist in a traditional manner by selecting every song manually but also choose to add only those songs which are from particular artists or a specific genre or those which you have rated the higher.

Did I forget to tell you that you can actually give a rating to every song in your collection and then order your list with those ratings as the criteria.

The Visualizer

Without a doubt, Apple loves eye candy! And it can be well seen in the visualizer that comes with iTunes. I really don't know about you but I love those dancing lines.

iTunes Music Store

For 99 cents a Song or $10 an album, iTunes Music Store lets you download individual songs from the Internet legally.

You can preview the first 30 seconds of the song before paying for the full version.

iTunes comes with a built-in CD burning software which allows you to burn your songs on a CD ten times.

Podcast Support

As of iTunes 4.9, you can import podcasts into the player. Podcasting is a method of publishing audio content on the internet, allowing users to subscribe to feeds. Many large radio stations now offer podcasts so that its listeners can catch up on any shows they missed.

System Requirements

  • Windows XP or 2000
  • 500 MHz Pentium class processor or better
  • QuickTime 6.5 (included)
  • 250 MB RAM recommended
  • Latest Windows service packs recommended
  • Supported CD-RW drive to burn CDs, video display card, soundcard
  • Broadband Internet connection recommended for buying and streaming music

Conclusion - If you have a large music collection and want a better organization of it then you really have give iTunes a try. It is available for no-cost at Apple's Site.
